Preventing Hair-Loss: Reduce Stress (Part II)

An increase in the amount lost or a slowing down of growth results in two words: hair-loss.

"Bald" is a hairstyle that many men dread. We will be compiling, over the next few weeks, a series that helps minimize hair loss caused by a multitude of different factors. Today, we're looking at one of the more logical explanations for increasing lost hair: reduce the amount of stress in your life.

It's true - stress does indeed cause conditions that contribute to hair loss. This can include:

  • Alopecia Areata - Sudden loss of large clumps of hair in areas around your scalp.
  • Telogen Effluvium (as mentioned in our previous blog post) - A condition where more hairs than normal prepare to fall out.
  • Trichotillomania - This is a habitual condition caused by stress and anxiety where the person pulls out hairs without realizing it.

Although a large majority of hair loss caused by stress and anxiety is caused by telogen effluvium, or simply stress weakened hair. But the other two are also a concern and affect a smaller percentage of the anxiety population.

You can help reduce stress by participating in activities that bring you joy, such as cooking, listening to music and beyond. If you're feeling over stressed at any point, take some time to relax. Your hair will thank you!

 

Preventing Hair Loss: Telogen Effluvium (Part I)

"Bald" is a hairstyle that many men dread. We will be compiling, over the next few weeks, a series that helps minimize hair loss caused by a multitude of different factors. Today, we will be looking at diet and vitamins. 

Hair loss described by poor dieting is called telogen effluvium. This type of hair loss condition causes hair follicles that are in the anagen (growing) stage to be prematurely pushed into the telogen (resting) phase of the hair growth cycle. This push causes follicles to fall out. 

The treatment process for telogen effluvium takes several months, and can be treated by ingesting more vitamins, minerals, and supplements such as Vitamin C, Biotin, Niacin, Iron and Zinc.

Below are some of the TOP FIVE FOODS for hair growth:

  1. Nuts (which contain omega-3 fatty acids, biotin, vitamin E and copper)
  2. Oysters (rich in zinc)
  3. Sweet Potatoes (omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, zinc, and vitamins A, B, C, K and E)
